Domain Name is a name used to locate and identify sets of computers on the internet.

The domain name was conceived with the aim of facilitating the memorization of computer addresses on the Internet. Without it, we would have to memorize a large sequence of numbers.

According to current (2005) rules, for the registration of a domain to be carried out, it is necessary at least two DNS servers connected to the Internet and already configured for the domain being requested.

Domain registration in Portugal is done at the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN). In Brazil, it is done by Registro.br, department of the Information and Coordination Nucleus of Ponto BR, executive arm of the Internet Management Committee in Brazil (CGI.br). To register a domain, it is necessary to be an entity legally represented or established in Brazil as a legal entity (Institutions that have CNPJ) or an individual (CPF) that has a contact in national territory.

An entity can register, under one extension, as many domains as it wants. However, it is not allowed to register the same name in different generic TLDs. The homonym restriction does not apply to extensions with restrictions. All available domain extensions, except the restricted ones, are classified as generic.
